What can my budget do? (Décor edition)

September 3, 2017

In this digital age, we look to the internet for so many ideas and inspiration. Don’t get me wrong, this can be good… but you know what’s missing from the celebrity designer weddings on Pinterest? The price! A lot of times we see elaborate floral arrangements, or installations dripping with crystals, and fall in love… but I beg you, please don’t set your heart on things that are not realistic for your budget.

Let’s take a look at a simple element of wedding design, the table scape of an 8 seater round table, and see how different choices can increase the costs.

Basic versus Premium Linens

While your good old faithful standard polyester tablecloth can cost around $20, more elaborate designs such as sequin on mesh, lace or textured taffeta can run to as much as $60 to $130.00. Right then and there, we see that with 10 tables, you can have a price difference of $1000.00+

Next, we can take a look at centrepieces- the star of the tablescape show.

There are many options for centrepieces, from lanterns to floral arrangements to elaborate candelabras and crystal pieces. I can’t speak for everywhere, but in Barbados, nothing says “wedding” like some beautiful, fresh floral arrangements. However, the use of imported florals can increase the cost of arrangements, giving sticker shock to most persons coming in from the United States or the United Kingdom.

For this purpose, let’s examine the cost of a small, submersible centrepiece, versus a large arrangement. A submersible centrepiece consists of blooms in vases with added water and floating candles, which can cost as little as $50.00 - compared to an elaborate floral arrangement which can cost around $250.00, which is 5x more. Just on centrepieces, your price difference can add up to a whopping $2000.00- which can cover the cost of another service such as a fun photo booth, or some dramatic uplighting.

My advice is- If your budget doesn’t stretch to having these on all the tables, you can either do a mixture of more affordable options or, use the florals only for the sweetheart table and welcome/escort card table.
